Delusional misidentifications

Making this because I am sick and tired of mis-info being spread around, or people claiming that there is no information on the subject.
I will be answering common questions, giving some information, and providing sources.
I am a diagnosed schizophrenic + maladaptive daydreamer who suffered/suffers from delusional misidentifications.
there will be reality checks from here on out

  • “What’s a DA?” A fake term, don’t use it. If you see someone use the term they are faking. The term DA (delusional attachment) was created by a racist, homophobic, abliest, who was also a kinnie when they created the term. It takes bare minimum research to know that this is not a real term, and even without resources like a psychologist it’s still easy to access.

  • “Can people have multiple delusional misidentifications?” Yes, but it needs to be cleared up that having these to pre-existing characters (anime characters, book characters, etc) is one of its rarest forms, and that you are significantly less likely to have tons of these as compared to non pre-existing characters.

  • “Is playing into delusions harmful?” Yes and no, it’s important to realize that psychosis effects people in wildly different ways, something that is destroying someone’s life could be helping someone else’s. HOWEVER unless you personally know the person experiencing delusions do not play in to them and do not reality check them. Having said that we need to discuss what playing into delusions actually is, saying “Hi insert name here” is not playing into a delusion. Going to use an example from a few years ago but I had a bad episode where I believed I was a war vet, I’ve already set boundaries and guidelines for how my friends should handle me during episodes, while I discussed my experiences they responded with things like “that’s horrible” “I’m sorry about that” “that must have been sad” instead of things like “I’m sorry that happened to you” “that must of been horrible to of gone through” “I’m sorry for your loss” they responded without feeding into my delusions or reality checking me, as long as you are not outright reaffirming their delusions you are fine.

  • “Can I sign off to show which delusion I am in?” No. This is not due to the fact that your in a delusion (another important thing to realize is that the lucidity of a delusion varies between people) but due to the fact that sign offs are from systems. We do not get to use system terms, we are not systems, we are not multiple people. It is extremely disrespectful to use their terms as if they were ours.

  • “Why do people with delusional misidentifications use kinning terms” To be honest I’m not sure, but I believe it stems from the fact and foundations of the term DA, and that we lack many terms of our own. While I personally do not like terms such as irl there isn’t anything wrong with it.

  • “Am I abliest for being uncomfortable by irls?” No, but understand that first and foremost we are real people with delusions. Like any mental illness it is perfectly fine to be uncomfortable with the symptoms it causes to a person, but that is no excuse to turn that in to something ablest. Things like “dni if you think your a fictional character” are ablest, saying, “delusional misidentifications make me uncomfortable” is perfectly valid.

  • “I think I may have a DA/be insert character here” That is not how it works in the slightest. There are some forms that appear more slowly as your brain starts to subtly connect and lead you to believe your a character, but in no way shape or form is it suddenly thinking that you may be that character. The way they work is not that you doubt being said character or person, but that you doubt you are yourself, thats the harm of it.

  • “Can delusional misidentifications have a positive impact” Yes. Like many psychological disorders delusional misidentifications can be triggered or formed as a trauma response. Does this mean everyone’s is? No, absolutely not. Many are debilitating and it has taken me 2 years to get to a point where they aren’t controlling my life. It is beyond important that you understand that you will never know someone’s situation beyond the screen, you can’t decide or gauge what impact their delusion is having on them, and because of that you don’t get to decide if it’s positive or negative, you don’t get to decide their recovery plan, you don’t get to decide wether that persons delusions are being fed in a bad way.

And one of the biggest questions: can you self diagnose?

This may be controversial, though it shouldn’t be. No, you really can’t. The thing about psychological disorders is that the symptoms are so complex and constantly overlap, not to mention that much like psychosis, delusional misidentifications can be both a symptom and a diagnosis. One symptom can be a part of hundreds of different psychological disorders to the point where it is even hard for trained professionals to give some exact diagnoses.
This is not to say however that you cannot say you have an undiagnosed delusional misidentification, that is valid, but much like a sore throat you can’t just have one and say you have strep throat. Please understand that this is not classist, not everyone has the money or is in a place where they can safely get diagnosed, but that does not mean you will always be like that. You can self diagnose to an extent, but do not claim you are experiencing a delusional misidentification disorder until you have a diagnosis.
